Magnetic Baby, Episode 2

MagneticBaby1.jpgI’m way late in announcing that the second episode of Magnetic Baby, the online documentary by David Becker and Pamela Romanowsky about glam rockers Semi Precious Weapons, is available. I was reminded to get on the stick by a great article by Shira Golding at MediaRights who interviewed the filmmakers about how things are going in their search for funding and finding an audience in the pretty much uncharted waters of vodcasting a documentary.

“The pair screened early cuts to folks at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music and film festival, where they were shooting the band, and were encouraged by the positive responses. That’s when they decided to start getting the project out to audiences via podcasting. ‘Podcasting is just a very very cool, very accessible medium right now. It’s free for the viewer, and it couldn’t be easier to download and watch,’ says Becker.” Read the entire article>>

They haven’t released a 3rd episode yet so better late than never! Watch the Episodes 1 & 2>>

Cinedulce: Julieta y Ramon

One of my favorite people in NYC is filmmaker Hugo Perez. His short Julieta y Ramon is showing on WNET’s ReelNY as well as online as part of Cinedulce’s presentation of NY International Latino Film Fest shorts. I tried to embed the video but the code wasn’t working correctly so here is a link to it. Another short by Hugo, Betty la Flaca, will be on HBO Latino in August and September. It’s a riot–highly recommend!

These are narrative shorts, but he has a feature doc coming out soon and one in progress, so keep your eyes peeled for more Hugo Perez!

Feel free to touch yourself

(I couldn’t resist!) On of my cool new connections from SXSW was getting a chance to watch a then-rough cut of David Becker and Pamela Romanowsky’s Magnetic Baby, a new serial documentary delivered via web/podcast. Since SXSW, those crafty kids have gotten Barbara Kopple on board as exec prod and launched the now-polished first episode. The subject? An up-and-coming glam rock band Semi-Precious Weapons and their quest to make it big. Beautifully produced and chock-full of great music, costumes and glitter, it is a fun watch and a neat experiment in building audience online.
