The Monestary wins Full Frame
In general, I think Full Frame has one of the WORST websites out (agree? disagree?). I can never seem to find what I’m looking for. It only took me three clicks to find the list of winners, though the press release is formatted so badly, I’m just going to let you know that The Monestary (also won the Joris Ivens award at IDFA) won the Grand Jury prize. They have a lot of awards, so many walk away with some recognition. AJ has the patience to list them all.
On a separate note, a quick stop at the IDFA website revealed that funding for the Jan Vrijman Fund has been pulled by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I can’t remember the exact amount the Fund was getting, but this loss apparently puts the program in jeopardy of continuation. The Fund supports filmmakers in developing countries; the projects can be rough around the edges artistically because they are often coming out of places in the world without a lot of support for filmmaking, but it will be a big loss to the global documentary film world if that program ceases.
Big Sky Documentary Film Festival
Big Sky kicks off today and runs to Feb 21. I’m a big Montana fan and am really wishing I could be there! The line-up has a lot of festival favorites from the past year with a few newer titles.
Check out the program - Features, Shorts and Big Sky competitions, in addition to Minidocs (shorts), Asia and Special Presentations. Filmmaker Les Blank, a veteran doc maker and lon-time self-distributor is pictured right from the 2006 fest - this year he is showing his newest work, The Tea Film.
Also more than worth noting, Documentary Insider Sarah Jo Marks is on the jury, as is Sky Sitney, director of programming at Silverdocs, Phoebe Brush from Full Frame and the awesome Steve James, among several others. The jury line-up is here.
I met festival founder Doug Hawes-Davis at the IFP Market where he brought a new film he’s working on with partner Dru Carr - together, they are the awesome High Plains Films. Keep an eye out for Brave New West coming soon.
