iW: Top Ten Lists for 2007

indieWIRE invited me and other contributors to submit top 10 lists for this year in our film world, and they are now posted. From my list:

Billy the Kid” - This simple character-driven story captured my heart. All the controversy around it hopefully hasn’t dimmed the great work of new director Jennifer Vendetti.

Manda Bala” (Send a Bullet) - One of the freshest and most beautiful documentaries I’ve seen in a long time. I’m sorry that it is being forgotten on the critics’ lists. Read the lists at indieWIRE>>

Forever by Heddy Honigmann

In case you didn’t notice, I walk a fine line working for a documentary distributor and also writing about docs. I’ve allowed others to do the writing about the films that I’m trying to generate publicity for, to at least try to appear objective. But, I’m going to have to meander over to the other side to be sure that my dear readers know about this film, Forever by Heddy Honigmann. It is one of the best films I’ve seen so far this year and because of its quiet, lyrical qualities, it has been flying a bit under the radar, though folks who have seen it have sung its praises, including Tom Hall in a wonderful mention after its Silverdocs screening.

I won’t venture a review, but I’ll point you to a not only positive but beautifully written review by Stuart Klawans for The Nation and the trailer to get a peek. It opens at Film Forum on September 12 in NYC and on September 21 at the E Street Cinema in DC. Other dates will be posted on First Run/Icarus Film’s Playdates page if you are elsewhere in the country. Do yourself a favor and see this film.
