iW: Silverdocs Goes Deeper into Democracy and Documentary
Think deeper. Silverdocs, the AFI/Discovery Documentary Festival, held from June 12-17, invited guests to ponder faith, music, democracy and war, in their program of 100 films from 42 countries, in addition to explorations in documentary craft and the future of the business of documentary through their special events and conference panels. It’s a lofty goal to ask film goers to “think deeper” but this years’ fest did indeed provoke lively conversations and set a high bar for intellectually engaging festival attendees. This is a really great report! I saw this in IndieWire this morning, and I clipped it and saved it to my files because I know I’ll want to come back to it. I printed out a copy of my clipping and just unpacked here at the office because I want to discuss it with folks. And I thought, let me check the by line on that … of course, of course! How could I not have guessed! This is a very thought provoking essay in its own right and (dare I say) may make the festival look a little more polished than it really is? Thank you for this.
