(I couldn’t resist!) On of my cool new connections from SXSW was getting a chance to watch a then-rough cut of David Becker and Pamela Romanowsky’s Magnetic Baby, a new serial documentary delivered via web/podcast. Since SXSW, those crafty kids have gotten Barbara Kopple on board as exec prod and launched the now-polished first episode. The subject? An up-and-coming glam rock band Semi-Precious Weapons and their quest to make it big. Beautifully produced and chock-full of great music, costumes and glitter, it is a fun watch and a neat experiment in building audience online.

  1. Wow. Nice idea, but I can’t say I love the music. Ugh. It’s like a Poison-flashback circa 1993. Remember that’s why we all got into Nirvana? Self-obsession is never a great reason to be famous.

  2. I guess I’m a sucker for Poison (I’m pretty sure I had a Brett Michaels t-shirt at some point).

  3. Um…Kurt Cobain was the most self-obsessed person in pop culture history. Just because he hated himself doesn’t mean he wasn’t a total ego-maniac. Youtube interviews with Kurt, he wanted fame, he wanted people to love him, for money and for his esteem. Just because someone likes themselves it make them shallow and meaningless? NO. And really can you tell me any artist that isn’t really into who they are or what they are doing? No..because if they weren’t self-obsessed they would have never walked into some corporate office and said “please love me, please pay me, please make me famous.”

And really…the guys in this band are really hot…so who fucking cares if they like themselves. I would like to like themselves. :) Go on…correct my grammar.

    Yeah Agnes.
