Gail Orenstein’s Photos
For those who haven’t spent time surfing Flickr, I thought I’d mention a very intriguing photostream you might want to check out: Gail Orenstein.
Orenstein is a photojournalist. But she is using Flickr in an intriguing way - she posts headlines and news articles that are on one hand unrelated to the photos, but the pairings of article to photo are in and of themselves social commentary. “I photograph the sex workers, prisioners, poverty, war and difficult marginal sitautions,” she writes. “i will now merge these forgotten people with the headlines of the news, usually only shown with pictures of the powerful, or blonde news presenters!!!”
Her photos, in totality, chronicle a wide swath of life around the world, though recent photos have definitely revolved more around the grittier side of existence. It isn’t tough to understand how her camera is drawn to the colorful and raw. While I can’t say I “enjoy” her work, it is always thought-provoking and exceedingly intriguing.
