YouTube Virgin

So, I put up my first vid on YouTube - I recorded a bit of the Art Parade in Soho this past weekend. I was testing my Lumix dig cam as well as the upload process. When I view it on my computer, it looks ok (considering it was shot on a digital still camera) but it is quite degraded when it appears on YouTube. I’m guessing they don’t like to give away bandwidth so they compress the heck out of it - can anyone suggest the best way to process vids before uploading to get the best pic possible? I’ve seen some nice looking stuff on there, so I know it can be done!
