Truly Indie

Brian Brown of New Yorker Films mentioned Truly Indie at the distribution panel at Newport last Friday as one of the new alt dist modes, and I read a bit more about it on AJ’s blog. Does anyone know any films that have used this service since it launched last year?

“The main cause of death among independent films is anonymity.” Yes, but they could just stink and fail to pick up a following.

  1. According to its “Coming Soon” page, the following films are projects of Trully Indie:
    Cavite
    Fall to Grace
    Autumn
    Beowulf & Grendel

Then, while searching on IMDBpro, I found these additional films:
    The Dogwalker
    Tibet: A Budhist Trilogy

  2. I was wondering about films that had already gone through the process. I haven’t heard of the 2 you pulled up from IMDB. Thanks.

  3. I have talked to some people who are doing it or are considering it. They like the idea, but really it’s just a service deal with Landmark to four-wall your film and market it some, and an expensive one at that. Doesn’t sound too original, innovative or helpful to me. That said, John Pierson and his class are using it for Cavite, and he’s pretty smart. Second, The Dogwalker is Jacques Thelamaque (sp?)who in addition to being a filmmaker is also working for withoutabox, which is distributing this film through truly indie.

  4. It seems like it’s mostly geared toward fueling DVD sales (which is what theatrical is for anyway, right?). I was curious if they’ve had any success creating buzz around a film (they advertise customised distribution plans). I guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see how Cavite does. Thanks.
