Arctic Son

Besides the fact that the Arts Engine folks are totally awesome, Arctic Son is a wonderful film (pictured, me with some of the ladies at the reception following the screening).

Stan is a young man from a broken home who grew up in Washington with his mother. He attempts to reconnect with his father north of the Artic Circle while dealing with a bit of an alcohol problem and some angst over the direction of his life. Though Stan Sr. continually refers to the fact that it is much warmer than it used to be, it is apparent that the filmmakers spent the time needed in that (to most of us) hostile environment to capture the clash of generations, the difficulty in maintaining Native culture, the impact of environmental degradation and some of the stresses on today’s youth. It is a quiet film that doesn’t patronize the subjects or the audience. Nicely done Andrew Walton and crew.
